Fishing and Health
Hooked on Health
For many, fishing is simply a relaxing way to spend a day or two. But beyond the thrill of a tight line and a good catch, the simple art of angling offers an incredible array of science-backed benefits for your body and mind. Its more then a sport; its a powerful, low impact form of therapy and fitness.
If you're looking for a hobby that recharges your mental battery while giving your body a gentle workout, its time to trade that gym membership for a tackle box.
The Mindful Angler: 3 ways fishing heals the mind
1. The natural antidote to stress
There's a reason we find being by water so soothing. Scientists call it the "blue space" effect. Studies show that spending time by oceans, rivers, or lakes can significantly reduce the levels of cortisol, the primary stress hormone.
The repetitive, rhythmic movements of casting and retrieving, combined with the quiet atmosphere of nature, naturally lowers your heart rate and shifts your focus from the endless loop of daily worries to the simple movement of the float on the water
2. Fishing as Meditation (The Flow State)
While you may not be sitting crossed-legged chanting "ohm," fishing achieves a similar result to meditation. It forces you into a "flow state."
This deep concentration on a single, peaceful task-watching your line, feeling the tension, anticipating a bite-shuts off the brain's internal chatter.
This deep focus acts like a mental detox, improving your patience, concentration, and clarity long after you pack up your gear.
3. Building Resilience and Self-Esteem
Fishing is a constant lesson in persistence. You change the bait, move location, wait through the slow spells, and eventually, the effort pays off.
These small challenges and the resulting successes are crucial for building emotional resilience. Landing a fish, no matter the size, provides a huge, tangible burst of accomplishment that boosts self-esteem and confidence
The Fitness of the Float: Physical Exercise You Didn't Know You Were Getting
While you wont break a sweat like you would during a run, a day of fishing provides valuable low-impact fitness that's perfect for all ages.
1. Low-Impact, High Reward Exercise
During a days fishing you use lots of physical movements, from walking to your spot, which adds steps and boosts your cardiovascular health, wading out into the water engages your core and leg muscles for balance, and even casting out and reeling in provides a full-body workout, engaging your arms, back, and shoulders.
Its a form of active relaxation cardio and strength training blended seamlessly into a fun activity, often without the joint strain of high-impact sports.
2. The Crucial Vitamin D Boost
You can't make vitamin D sitting indoors.
Exposure to the sun while fishing allows your body to naturally synthesise this vital nutrient, which is essential for: Strong bones and teeth (calcium absorption), A healthy immune system, and regulating mood and fighting depression.
Don't forget to use sun screen, sunglasses and a hat to protect yourself from the harmful rays.
Fishing is a powerful reminder that taking care of yourself doesn't have to feel like being a chore. It can be a peaceful, rewarding adventure that simultaneously calms your mind, and strengthens your body.
So the next time you feel the pull of a stressful week, answer the call of the water, and get in contact with us at Reel Skills Academy where we will be happy to start you along the path of angling. Your health will thank you for it!
